| Meerschaum
is a natural mineral which was made millions of years ago. Meerschaum is found in Turkey and Tanzania. The African meerschaum is reasonably younger than the Turkish one. Meerschaum is a kind of sea fossil which is hydrous (watery) magnesium silicate. It contains 42.5% silicon, 42.5% magnesium and 15% clay, carbonic acid, and water. It is a very soft kind of stone. Meerschaum is found in the ground 20 -80 meters down below the surface. Some of the places where you find meerschaum were originally an ocean or a lake. Because of the silicon the meerschaum will change colour when you smoke it, but it will take some time. It can become almost black after two generations of smoking. The Meerschaum pipe has been given a wax treatment to protect the surface. |
