The song White Christmas was composed by the American composer Mr. Irving Berlin (1888 -1989) around 1940 and was originally written for the 1942 musical film Holiday Inn. It was first performed live on Christmas day 1941 by Mr. Harry Lillis ‘Bing’ Crosby, on his NBC radio show The Kraft Music Hall. The song won the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 15th Academy Awards in 1943. It proved that a secular Christmas song, written by a Jewish immigrant, could be an important commercial success.
Over the years, this song has been covered by many famous singers, and it is today the world’s best-selling single with estimated sales of over 100 million copies.
The White Christmas pipes have been specially created, manufactured and composed to form a two-pipe set featuring one of Bing Crosby’s favourite pipe shapes, in connoisseur circles often referred to as “Crosby’s”.
These are Liverpool shapes with extra-fine, long stems and elongated mouthpieces and Easyloader tops. To be able to manufacture such a shape requires extra-long briar blocks (or ebauchons), which are more and more difficult to find.
Crosby’s are among the most elegant pipes and especially in smaller sizes extremely rare. This Crosby set in size group 1 (the 1110 with taper mouthpiece and the 1210 with saddle mouthpiece) is available in several finishes.
Each pipe is fitted with an elegant 9ct Gold band, engraved with a signature Barley pattern and the set is housed in a custom-made “Vintage” leather case. This series is strictly limited to world-wide only 64 pipe sets:
- 15 pipe sets in Cumberland finish
- 15 pipe sets in County finish
- 14 pipe sets in Rubybark finish
- 20 pipe sets in Shell Briar finish.
