As you might have heard The Danish Pipe Shop (TDPS) celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019, and released several anniversary products. One of our favorite pipe shapes is the Dan Shape with the semi tall bowl and the straight but upping shank and stem. The model is iconic and used to be a top seller through decades at another and now closed Danish pipe shop: Pipe-Dan. Many of the Pibe-Dan shapes were originally designed by Danish pipe maker icons like Gert Holbek and Ib Loran. In those days the pipe was made by a guy living in Jutland in pretty big numbers. After they closed in 1991, the model disappeared. Now and then Søren Refbjerg made his version of it and lately we have seen Tom Eltang making it in a handmade, wonderful version for the Copenhagen Collection series. So we thought it could be fun to reintroduce this Danish classic pipe design in an affordable price range. Together with Tom Eltang we constructed a master based from an original that is owned by our CEO, Nikolaj Nielsen, which he actually got as a farewell present from Mrs Dan. Then we had good friends in Italy to produce the pipe in four different finishes in a standard size. The briar is top Italian briar wood, the stem is made of black acrylic and as a special feature the tenon is the famous Stanwell one, because we wanted to optimise the draft – we from TDPS actually provided the tenons. And BTW – this shape is perfect for smoking flake tobacco as well as mixtures. The choice of this pipe is also a good suggestion if you are new to pipesmoking.
